As more and more states are legalizing both medical marijuana and recreational marijuana for adults, the traditional method of marijuana ingestion is changing. In past decades when cannabis was a black market product, most people smoked marijuana in either a pipe or in a marijuana cigarette commonly known as a 'joint.’ However in recent years as the potential health hazard of inhaling smoke from combusted dried marijuana flower has become more and more apparent, many people are choosing other methods of ingestion. Another method of ingestion is eating the actual herb as opposed to consuming an extract. The herb is prepared by heating the cannabis to a specific temperature for a period of time in order to activate the cannabinoids contained within the flowers buds. This is called 'decarbing’ or decarboxylation. Unless marijuana is heated to become 'decarbed’ the cannabis flower would not yield any psychoactive response. But this decarboxylation process is likely more cumbersome than most users are willing to deal with.
The most popular method of ingesting cannabis is vaping. So, sales of vaping devices for cannabis flower and oils are soaring. Vaping cannabis is done either by vaping extracted THC oil; similar to the controversial method of vaping nicotine, or by vaping the actual dried flower buds. There are a number of potential risks to vaping in general but especially so when vaping oils, whether it be from nicotine products or cannabis products. Part of the potential risk revolves around how the substance being vaped is extracted in that in many cases, potentially harmful chemical are used in the extraction process. When vaping actual dried flower buds, use of an extracted material is unnecessary so one of the possible risks ceases to become an issue. But even any potential negative effects of vaping dry herb are largely unknown since this type of cannabis ingestion is relatively new and sufficient research into the various potential risks has yet to be fully explored.
