Marijuana is one of the nation’s hottest issues.
With various states legalizing recreational or medicinal marijuana, and rumors flowing from all corners of the country, it can be difficult to keep up with where your state is.
Whether you’re for or against marijuana, this is where North Dakota stands.
According to Marijuana Policy Project, North Dakota is one of more than 30 states with some form of legalized medicinal hemp. And there’s currently a campaign to legalize it recreationally in this state as well.
When it comes to medicinal marijuana use in North Dakota, it requires a prescription to obtain and a license to grow and distribute.
However, this is when things get technical.
The 2018 Farm Bill separated hemp and marijuana as two different things. Hemp is any part of a cannabis plant that is less than 0.3 percent THC. The same Farm Bill delisted hemp as a Schedule 1 narcotic, making it legal to buy and grow in all states. However, you need a license to grow hemp.
Then there’s CBD Oil, which can be found in many stores. CBD Oil contains hemp and in only 0.1 percent THC, making it legal to buy and sell, according to the Food & Drug Administration.
The North Dakota Department of Health say medical use is allowed with a prescription and can only be obtained by licensed distributors. Things like CBD Oil are legal to buy without a prescription. Recreational use is still illegal after a ballot measure failed in 2018.
According to the Colorado Department of Revenue, recreational marijuana revenues in that state have hit over $1 billion since legalization in 2014.
