West Hollywood’s First Cannabis Café Has Some Neighbors Nervous – LA Magazine

The country’s first-ever legal cannabis café is opening in West Hollywood this September, but not everyone is down with 420, the Los Angeles Times reports.

When the West Hollywood Business License Commission unanimously granted Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Café a cannabis consumption license Tuesday, the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce was excited to see what the place would do for pot tourism in the area. Likewise, a neighborhood watch group was happy that the café would bring with it 24-hour security, and local parents were psyched that they’d have a place to get high away from their kids.

Still, others aren’t welcoming the news.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Rabbi Denise Eger of Congregation Kol Ami—which is across the street from the Café Lowell site on North La Brea Avenue—told the Commission that she was worried that the smell of weed would waft through her synagogue. On Wednesday, she followed up with an email:

“The business is to have outdoor space for smoking pot—and I don’t know why my congregation members and participants have to walk through clouds of marijuana to get to synagogue.”

Lowell Herb Co. co-owner Sean Black, a partner in the café, admits that the prospect is “a little scary,” but he says he thinks the business’s air filtration system will prevent any cross-contamination. “We’re hoping to have a great relationship with her.”

The café will serve food and non-alcoholic drinks during the day, plus cannabis products from Lowell Herb Co. and other local pot purveyors. At 9 p.m. the cannabis bar will open.

As the first legal pot café, Lowell is something of a noble experiment. The city will monitor it for a year until its license expires to evaluate it impact on the community.

“We want to set a high bar,” Black said. “We better do it right and not mess it up for everybody else. We all feel that pressure.”

The café is set to open on September 1.
