American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) Global Brand President Chad Kessler doesn’t think there should be an age restriction on cannabidiol (CBD) products, according to CNBC. The retailer is planning on adding products containing hemp extract to its stores this fall.
“We don’t think there should be an age restriction,” Kessler said to CNBC. „We are sticking to just topical CBD, which all the evidence shows is safe.”
AEO, a retailer known for its young adult and teen clothing, will be partnering with cannabis company Green Growth Brands to roll out the exclusive CBD line, which will include products such as balms and lotions. Green Growth Brands has already partnered with other retailers, including DSW and Abercrombie & Fitch.
“We have a lot of confidence in its supply chain to make sure its product is clean and safe,” Kessler said.
AEO is aware of the potential backlash that will likely come from a teen retailer selling CBD products, but it plans to educate customers (and parents of customers) on CBD to ease their concerns.
Congress legalized CBD, which doesn’t cause a high like the other cannabis product tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in December 2018, but it’s unclear exactly how CBD products will be regulated. CBD is often being promoted as a way to reduce stress, help with pain management, aid in better sleep, among other product benefits.
Total Retail’s Take: AEO is joining a growing number of retailers which have decided to add CBD products to their product assortment. Ulta Beauty, CVS and Urban Outfitters have already jumped on the CBD bandwagon, just to name a few. Even luxury retailers, including Neiman Marcus, have moved into the CBD space. CBD products have become increasingly trendy, especially among millennials, a sought after demographic for retailers. The decision by AEO to sell CBD products could help to keep the brand enticing and relevant to its core demographic.
