American tennis player John Isner signs endorsement deal with CBD company – USA TODAY

American tennis star John Isner signed an endorsement deal earlier this week with the sports performance drink company Defy, becoming the sport’s first player to ink a deal with a CBD company.

The Defy sports drink contains 20 milligrams of CBD per bottle. The hemp extract that is used in the drink does not produce the psychoactive effects associated with marijuana use, according to the World Health Organization.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the chemical compounds found in the cannibis plant. It has grown in popularity in recent years for its perceived health benefits.

Defy was co-founded by former NFL player Terrell Davis. Both Davis and Isner are graduates of the University of Georgia.

As part of his deal with the company, the No. 14-ranked Isner will be wearing Defy’s logo on his hat during matches and he’ll also be drinking the CBD-infused beverage, which is promoted as a muscle recovery aid.

“I play a sport where taking a single point off can be the difference between winning and losing a match and Defy is a product specifically intended to put me in a position to perform on every single point,” Isner, the top-ranked American tennis player, said in a statement Tuesday.
