Short’s Brewing Will Start Making Beer-Flavored Edibles, CBD-Infused Sparkling Water – Eater Detroit

One of Michigan’s trippiest breweries Short’s Brewing Company is buddying up with the state’s largest medical marijuana company to make beer-flavored CBD and THC edibles and drinks. The company Green Peak Innovations confirmed the new partnership this week in an announcement at a cannabis industry conference. The first products expected to arrive in late-2019.

The plan calls for a line of cannabis-infused items such as Soft Parade-flavored gummies and Huma Lupa Licious vape pens. Short’s will also be lending its brand cannabis-infused non-alcoholic drinks such as cold brew coffee, sparkling water, tonics, teas, and lemonades, per a release. While it’s currently illegal under Michigan law to add THC to alcoholic beverages, Short’s and Green Peak hope to eventually make THC and CBD beers, too.

With the rise of marijuana legalization led by states such as Colorado, Washington, and Oregon, companies have rushed to corner a part of the cannabis market. The result is a lot of new products infused with THC and CBD (the non-psychoactive derivative of cannabis). Many brewers have already experimented with weed beers, which use cannabis terpenes (a non-psychoactive compound) and don’t actually get you high. Lagunitas Brewing Company, which owns a significant stake in Short’s, has already experimented with THC-infused sparkling waters.

In metro Detroit, bars and restaurants began experimenting with CBD-infused beverages such as smoothies and cocktails earlier this year. However, health departments swiftly cracked down on those menu items. Many local agencies and companies are still awaiting clearer regulations from the FDA on products containing cannabis.

The Short’s gummies and vape pens will be among the first products to hit the market, with the beverages slated to debut in 2020.
