I recently had the great honor of tasting SHERBINSKIS Cannabis while attending the yearly Emerald Cup. The Emerald Cup is unlike any other event I’ve ever had the honor of attending. How can this be explained? It is like a massive state fair, but only for cannabis, and you can buy anything that is displayed for awards- within reason and weight legality of course! I traveled out from New Jersey to attend the Granddaddy of all cannabis harvest fairs in the world, but not just around the corner. I knew that I had limited time to spend searching for SHERBINSKIS, even though there was a plethora of dispensaries that carry this ultra-luxe brand, I just couldn’t figure out when I could get away from the task at hand, covering the Emerald Cup for Forbes Vices .

Cannabis has really raised the bar on utter quality in recent years. There is nothing like the new strains, tangles of dreams that manifest themselves into experiences that get us medicated, SHERBINSKIS help me get there fast.

Warren Bobrow=WB: Please tell me about yourself. Where are you from? How old were you when you first discovered our plant? How old were you? Who were you with?
Mario Guzman= MG: I was born and raised in Sacramento, CA. I was eleven-years-old when I was introduced to the plant by my older sister and her boyfriend; my mother had given me approval. It was some bad weed that didn’t get me high [Laughs]. It wasn’t until my freshman year of high school that I discovered better quality weed. I also realized I had a deep affection for the plant.
WB: Why cannabis? What did you want to be when you (grew) up? Tell me about your path to where you are now?
MG: Most of my young life, I was always a high-level athlete. I excelled in all of the sports that I played—baseball, rugby, football. I thought I was going to either play professional baseball or football, because I was very talented at both. I actually played football with Teddy Bruschi. He went on to go and win multiple Super Bowls, and I went on to find a career in cannabis. I played football with him at Roseville High School where we both attended. Point being, I was an athlete that played with him. One path I could have taken was athletics. I ended up getting more into cannabis. I was more into selling weed. That part wasn’t very conducive to having a college career, so yeah, I’m from Roseville and played football. I wanted to play at Cal Berkeley. That was my love and my dream. I realized I wasn’t going to be able to achieve that, because my parents were going through a divorce, I started smoking a lot more. I started hanging out with my friends a lot. Shortly after high school, I had a bad break up with a girlfriend.

I ended up on this spiritual journey very early on. At 19, I was going to go to Pensacola Florida to go to bible college and study to be a pastor. I was in church one day. I think I was 20-years-old, and I heard the sermon. He talked about “the one astray,” and it was about how God keeps his eye on not just this whole herd of sheep, but if one gets away, the one who gets away is just as important as the whole flock. He followed up by saying there are people in this room who have their own network and that can be a light in darkness in places that I can never be. He talked about how it’s our responsibility as people to go in and to be a light in darkness.
What I understood and felt was that I could go out into the world and I could be a light. I could still preach quote unquote “the gospel,” but I could do so without having to be limited to the walls of a church. When I came to the Bay Area, I quickly was introduced to the cannabis culture—Prop 215 and SB 420 growers growing in their garage, going and beginning that relationship between the urban grower and then the dispensaries—which I was part of. I was a real estate agent by trade when I moved to San Francisco. When I was 20, I got my real estate license and then followed my heart from Sacramento to the Bay Area. I discovered I was always using cannabis. When I started growing, it was out of necessity, not because I really wanted to but I needed to at the time to pay my bills. When I started to develop the relationship with these dispensary owners and with these patients, I decided to dedicate my life to it at that point.

WB: What is your six month and twelve month plans? Are you inside or outside grown? Why?
MG: It’s grown seasonally because nothing can produce cannabis better than the sun. In six months, we’d like to ramp up our indoor production and release multiple new strains for SHERBINSKIS and for other brands that we are collaborating with. We’ll also be releasing our apparel, which will also be available exclusively at our Fairfax dispensary. Each month, we’ll also be dropping a new collaboration with an artist or somebody that can help us speak to the culture of Fairfax.
WB: What is your favorite restaurant? Where? What kind of food?
MG: This is a loaded question for my LA fans. Favorite meal, let me just say, chicken tacos…any day of the week, are the key to my heart. Aside from chicken tacos, anywhere that I can find a good steak and salad. All day.
WB: What is your passion?
MG: My passions are my relationships with this amazing plant, helping people, advocating for cannabis, and changing the way that people view this plant. Also, I’d say my relationships with my family and my friends. I’m passionate about the people I surround myself with.
