LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)-People in Lexington who use CBD are hopeful ahead of a senate vote to pass a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in Kentucky.
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant.
People like former University of Kentucky basketball player, Johnathan Davis, use CBD to manage pain and other ailments.
Davis says using medical marijuana could help people who need to find a stronger method of pain management than CBD.
Davis is a customer at CBD Time in Lexington.
CBD Time owner, Joe Boese, says the passing of the bill would be good for his business and the health of his customers.
Boese says his customers suffer from conditions like PTSD, fibromyalgia, and cancer.
He believes they all could benefit from having access to medical marijuana, but admits some of his customers have told them they fear breaking the law in order to get relief.
There has been some opposition to House Bill 136. Arguments against it recall concerns over weakening marijuana laws and exposure to youth.
However, after years of failed attempts, the bill passed through the House in a 63-30 vote.
Supporters of the bill like its’ sponsor Representative Jason Nemes, say opposition was expected, but its’ passing through the House was an important milestone.
House Bill 136 is now moving on to the Senate.
