CommCan launches ‘SIP,’ an all-natural soda infused with marijuana and made in Massachusetts – MassLive.com

CommCan has launched an infused beverage called “SIP,” what the company says is the first soda made with marijuana in the Massachusetts recreational market.

SIP is an all-natural soda made with THC distillate, real cane sugar and fresh lemon juice, CommCan officials said Friday.

Each 8.4-ounce can contains 5 milligrams of THC, the chemical that causes the psychoactive effect of cannabis, said Marc Rosenfeld, who co-owns CommCan with his siblings, Ellen and Jon.

“It’s tart and sweet but a light and refreshing drink,” Rosenfeld said in a phone interview, comparing the flavor of the drink to lemonade.

SIP is dispersed evenly with THC and has full carbonation. A consumer will likely feel effects of the beverage in 10 to 30 minutes, Rosenfeld said.

SIP was produced in a “mini soda company” in the CommCan kitchen, Rosenfeld said. An employee of the company used to own and run a small organic soda company in Brooklyn and took that knowledge to the cannabis industry.

Rosenfeld said CommCan went with lemon because it offers a “good, full flavor,” leaving SIP with no hints of marijuana taste. Later, the company wants to produce more flavors.

With only 5 milligrams in the can, consumers can dose themselves accordingly, Rosenfeld said.

“If you’re out with friends and everyone has an adult beverage in their hand, you can have this in your hand,” Rosenfeld said. “If you’re looking for something just to get high or feel the effects of cannabis immediately there are more concentrated ways to do that.”

As of Friday morning, SIP is available at CommCan’s retail store at 1525 Main St. in Millis. Later, it will be available at the company’s medical-only dispensary at 255 Turnpike Road in Southborough.

A single can of SIP is $12 and a four-pack goes for $40, all plus state tax unless you’re a medical patient, Rosenfeld said.

SIP has 51 calories and 12 grams of cane sugar. It’s vegan, gluten-free and has no artificial flavors or preservatives.

CommCan is family-owned by Massachusetts residents and is self-financed with no outside investors.

“It’s made here. It’s made by us. It’s made by local people,” Rosenfeld said.

In addition to launching in stores, SIP has its own website, Instagram page and YouTube video.
