When it comes to cannabidiol (CBD), one thing is for certain: There are a lot of different companies that want you to try their products. And though CBD does offer some potential benefits, it can be hard to tell what’s a gimmick and what’s actually worth trying.

With so many choices out there, we’re here to help you separate the good from the bad so you can find a great product that works for you.

Read on for our review of CBD company Joy Organics so you can decide if you want to give its CBD oils, gummies, and topicals a shot.

Joy Organics was started by a woman named Joy Smith and her family in 2018. After having issues with pain and sleep, she learned about CBD and wondered if it could bring her relief. She was passionate about finding products that really worked and eventually decided to make her own.

Today, Joy Organics offers a range of broad-spectrum CBD products that are third-party tested, certified organic, and loved by reviewers.

What’s broad-spectrum CBD?

Though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t guarantee the safety, effectiveness, or quality of CBD products, they can take action against brands or companies that make unfounded health claims. While some CBD brands have received warning letters from the FDA, Joy Organics hasn’t received any.

Additionally, there haven’t been any lawsuits filed against Joy Organics for any of its products or business practices. It’s also accredited by the Better Business Bureau and currently has an A rating.

However, in 2018, the company’s Orange Tincture was found to contain a fungicide commonly used on citrus fruit during independent testing by Remedy Review, a CBD watchdog website. Immediately following this, Joy Organics recalled the product and created a new third-party lab testing procedure to verify product quality and content.

Testing and certificates of analysis (COAs)

Prior to the recall of the Orange Tincture, Joy Organics was already in the practice of posting internal lab reports to its site. It did this for both the raw phytocannabinoid-rich (PCR) hemp oil used in its products, as well as for the final products.

However, according to a 2018 statement, the Orange Tincture recall prompted the company to update its third-party testing processes to keep its promise of transparency and quality. The company began:

  • posting third-party lab reports for every batch of raw PCR hemp oil
  • posting third-party lab reports for all finished products
  • including QR codes on all labels, which makes it easy to get access to the lab reports for each product you buy

In taking a look at the company’s website, it’s easy to find these COAs and lab reports — they’re listed underneath each product on the lab results page along with the date of completion. Clicking on a lab result will allow you to see the internal and third-party reports together.

Joy Organics uses several different labs for their testing. The most recent reports we reviewed came from labs that are either ISO/IEC 17025 accredited or in the process of accreditation. This means they provide valid testing results.

Hemp growth and processing

Joy Organics lists its entire process for growing and processing hemp on its website. Its hemp is grown in the United States and certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Joy Organics isn’t certified as compliant with the FDA’s current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs), but it notes on its website that its facility is cGMP compliant. This means that although Joy Organics hasn’t formally been certified by the FDA as having good manufacturing practices, it’s still complying with these regulations.

All Joy Organics products are broad-spectrum. The company offers a wide range of product types, including tinctures, gummies, softgels, salves, creams, an energy drink, a bath bomb, and even dog treats. There are also a few bundles with products sold together for a discounted price.

Potencies range from 10 to 25 milligrams (mg) for nontopical products and 200 to 500 mg for topicals.

The products are also reasonably priced compared with many high-quality CBD brands, ranging from $20 to $100. There are special discounts for veterans, teachers, first responders, medical personnel, and those with lower incomes.

Not only are reviews of Joy Organics products overwhelmingly positive, but they also speak highly of the company’s customer service and return policy. Many reviewers mentioned quick delivery and super easy returns if products weren’t meeting their standards.

Joy Organics offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. The website even says you can use the entire bottle before asking for a return, which can give you some time to decide if you’re getting the results you want.

CBD Gummies

These gummies come in two flavors — strawberry lemonade and green apple — and are made without the use of artificial flavors, colors, or dyes. Even better, reviewers confirm they actually taste good, which isn’t always the case with CBD gummies.

Another plus is that these gummies don’t contain gelatin, which makes them an option for vegans.

CBD Softgels, Curcumin Formula

This product doesn’t have a ton of reviews, but its sister product — the CBD Softgels, Everyday Formula — has received praise from reviewers. The main difference with this product is the addition of curcumin, which is found in turmeric and known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Joy Organics makes these softgels using nanoemulsion. Some research suggests that nanoCBD is easier for your body to absorb.

CBD Bath Bombs, Lavender Refresh

These CBD bath bombs are infused with organic lavender oil, which can have some awesome benefits for your skin. Lavender is also known for its calming effects and ability to relieve pain. Reviewers love this bath bomb and say it’s super relaxing and also makes a great gift.

Keep an eye on how bath bombs affect your skin. If you notice any redness, itching, or scaling, stop using the product.

CBD Salve

This CBD salve uses ingredients like lavender oil and eucalyptus oil to help soothe muscle pain and support healthier skin. One reviewer said it provided instant pain relief, and others agreed that it got the job done well.

This product comes in two sizes. This is convenient if you want to start with the smaller, less expensive option to get a good feel for if this product is right for you.

Premium CBD Oil, Tranquil Mint

Joy Organics uses organic extra virgin olive oil as the base for this product. This flavor includes organic peppermint oil, which gives it a minty taste. But it also comes in lemon, orange, and natural flavors. Reviewers say it tastes great.

Tinctures are useful if you want to feel the effects of CBD fast, since placing them under your tongue allows for quicker absorption into the bloodstream.

This product comes in varying potencies, so if you’re new to CBD, try starting with 225 mg bottle. It’ll give you the lowest dose at 7.5 mg per 1 mL serving.

Depending on what your goal is for taking CBD, some products might be more useful for you than others. For example, if you’re looking for a product that helps you sleep, you might want to try the CBD Softgels with Melatonin. Or, if you have joint pain, the CBD Softgels with Curcumin might make the most sense to try.

You can also consider whether you’re looking for targeted relief, like sore muscles, or something for your general wellness. While topicals can be great for applying to a specific area of your body, edibles may be better for overall relief.

Ultimately, which Joy Organics product is right for you will come down to what type of product you’re comfortable with or prefer.

Joy Organics offers a wide range of CBD product types. Here’s what you need to know about each kind:

  • Softgels, gummies, and energy drinks. These products are precisely portioned and easy to add to any routine. You can take these with or without a meal.
  • Oils. To use an oil, simply place it underneath your tongue. This allows for quick absorption into the bloodstream. Always read the instructions to make sure you’re dosing correctly and holding it underneath your tongue for the right amount of time. It’s important to note that oils don’t typically absorb under the tongue in the same way as alcohol- or glycerin-based tincture. It’s a good idea to wait at least 2 hours before repeating a dose to err on the side of caution.
  • Salves and creams. Salves and creams are commonly used for pain relief or skin problems. Dosing for salves and creams isn’t precise, so start with a little and work your way up as needed.
  • Bath bombs. Bath bombs are placed into the bathtub after you’ve filled it with water. They usually fizzle and dissolve in the water fairly quickly, which will disperse the CBD and other ingredients before you hop in the tub.
  • Pet products. While some research has shown that CBD oil may help decrease pain in dogs with osteoarthritis, there aren’t a ton of studies on how CBD affects pets. It’s best to talk to your vet before giving CBD to your dog. However, keep in mind that in some states, vets aren’t allowed to actually recommend CBD products.

Some of these products also come in different potencies, so you’ll need to figure out what dose is right for you. The right dose will depend on why you’re taking it, your body weight, and your individual body chemistry. It’s usually best to start at a low dose and work your way up, but be sure to talk to your doctor before getting started with CBD.

CBD is generally considered safe, but studies show that some people may experience side effects like:

  • tiredness
  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in weight

It’s best to be careful when taking CBD edibles alongside high fat meals. A 2020 study found that high fat meals can significantly increase CBD blood concentrations. This can increase your risk of side effects.

CBD may interact with some medications, so it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting CBD.

Joy Organics has a good reputation because of its commitment to transparency and quality. The company makes internal and third-party lab testing results easily available for each product, which can give you some peace of mind in your search for the right product. The products are also relatively inexpensive compared with many high-quality brands.

Keep in mind that no matter what CBD product you decide to try, it’s always best to talk to your doctor before starting CBD.

Is CBD Legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.
