Illinois cannabis dispensaries continued to break records in September, as adult-use sales increased 5.7% to more than $67.64 million.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) reported Monday that recreational marijuana sales grew to an all-time high for the fifth month in row.
Adult-use dispensaries sold 1.42 million items, the majority of which went to in-state residents who spent a combined $49.79 million on recreational cannabis last month, up from $46.74 million in August.
For their part, out-of-state residents spent $17.85 million at adult-use cannabis dispensaries in September, a slight uptick over the $17.21 million they spent one month earlier.
Since adult-use sales began in January, recreational dispensaries in Illinois have raked in more than $431 million, according to IDFPR data.
The IDFPR’s report on Monday did not include information about purchases made at medical marijuana dispensaries. That data is collected by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), which is slower to report medical cannabis sales figures.
Nevertheless, through the first eight months of 2020, medical marijuana patients in Illinois spent more than $235.7 million at dispensaries licensed through the state’s Medical Cannabis Patient Program (MCPP).
Medical marijuana sales in Illinois surpassed $31.54 million in August but decreased nearly 5.2% compared to July, when patients spent more than $33.25 million across 55 medical cannabis dispensaries.
According to state records, there were 67 adult-use dispensaries licensed to operate as of September 23, 2020.
Cannabis market research firm BDSA has projected that sales of marijuana in Illinois will reach $1.5 billion by 2025. More than $667 million has already been spent on legal cannabis — both recrational and medical — in Illinois this year.
Recall that Illinois collected $52 million in cannabis tax revenue through the first six months of the year.
