2020 Saint Jane CBD Review: Pros, Cons, Best Products – Healthline

There are copious amounts of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the popular ones you’ve probably heard of by now.

No, it won’t get you “high” like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but there’s a reason it’s been making appearances in everything from gummies to beauty products: Preliminary studies suggest it may help lessen pain, inflammation, and anxiety, among other possible uses.

Given how crowded the CBD market is, it’s important to make sure you’re being choosy with your CBD products, no matter which forms you prefer.

Saint Jane is a relatively new luxury skin care line that uses U.S.-grown, hemp-derived CBD. Headquartered in San Francisco, Saint Jane products are available online and in hundreds of Sephora stores across the country.

Keep reading for a deep dive into Saint Jane’s reputation and quality, as well as a look at some of the company’s most popular products.

Saint Jane was launched in January 2019 and was dubbed after Jane de Chantal, a 1500s-era saint who spent her life healing people, particularly the elderly, the unwell, and unwed mothers.

After a successful launch, the brand quickly boomed into Sephora stores, becoming Sephora’s second CBD brand after Lord Jones.

This CBD brand, although new, has received a ton of press and positive buzz around its luxury (and rather pricey) products with no signs of slowing down.

Also important to note is that unlike some other CBD brands, Saint Jane has no pending lawsuits related to safety or quality. The company also hasn’t received any Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning letters.

Though the FDA doesn’t guarantee the safety or quality of nonprescription CBD products, the agency can (and does) send out warning letters to brands that break the rules.

Hemp source and manufacturing

On its website, Saint Jane says its hemp is grown in the United States and that its botanicals are “sustainably sourced, curated from regions best-known for potency, purity and responsible farming.”

However, Saint Jane doesn’t provide detail on exactly where the farms are, or how the products are made.

The word “clean” is seen frequently across its website, but there doesn’t seem to be any information on what this means in terms of how the products are made.

The brand also doesn’t seem to use organic hemp or seem to be certified compliant with the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs).

Third-party testing

For some products, Saint Jane makes current certificates of analysis (COAs) readily available. COAs are lab testing results that let you know how much CBD and THC is in a product, as well as whether any contaminants have been detected.

According to the COAs, levels of THC and contaminants in Saint Jane products are below acceptable limits. CBD levels are mostly within about 10 percent of the labeled amounts.

However, the CBD concentration isn’t listed on the packaging or product page for certain beauty products (e.g., the Luxury Lip Shine). The COA provides the CBD concentration in milligrams/grams, but the product page doesn’t give anything to compare that number to.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Luxury Lip Cream, Bright Repair Eye Cream, and C-Drops don’t have contaminant testing available.

We recommend only purchasing products that have comprehensive COAs that include cannabinoid and contaminant information.

Saint Jane products are grouped into three categories: face, lip, and body.

Facial products include:

Lip products include a:

The ingredients list for each type of lip shine is the same, but they come in different colors, and the Luxury Lip Shine appears to be a little more shimmery.

The body tab on the Saint Jane site right now includes only one item: the Luxury Body Serum.

Although Saint Jane doesn’t offer a large product line, it’s still an impressive lineup for a new company. There’s a good deal of hype surrounding this luxury brand at the moment.

All products on its website show 100 percent positive reviews. Its products on Sephora’s website are more transparent, revealing a few less-than-stellar reviews.

Saint Jane is considered a luxury brand, so perhaps it’s not surprising that its products land toward the top of the price range compared to other CBD brands.

There also doesn’t appear to be any program discount pricing or any pricing incentives available at this time either.

The Saint Jane website clearly states its return policy, saying that returns must be made “within 14 days of purchase as long as the merchandise is in original, unopened packaging.”

Saint Jane will send customers a prepaid return label and charge a $10 shipping and restocking fee.

Saint Jane Luxury Body Serum

  • CBD type: Full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 200 mg per 120-mL bottle
  • COA: Available on product page

Price: $$

This serum promises to protect the skin and moisturize without clogging pores. It’s designed to tackle skin issues like dullness, dryness, redness, and uneven texture.

It’s worth noting that although CBD is thought to have anti-inflammatory effects, there isn’t much research into CBD beauty products specifically. Lots of the benefits of this serum and others may come from the product’s other ingredients.

That said, this serum contains 28 active botanicals, like lemon myrtle, sandalwood, raspberry, and rosehip, that are said to help hydrate, brighten, and rejuvenate skin. The added sunflower seed oil also means it’s rich with omega.

While many reviewers love this serum for its subtle scent, visible results, and attractive packaging, some complain that the bottle makes it easy to drip and waste product — which can be a costly effect. A few others wish it were more moisturizing.

Added bonuses: This serum is vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, and comes in recyclable packaging.

Saint Jane Luxury Beauty Serum

  • CBD type: Full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 515 mg per 30-mL bottle
  • COA: Available on product page

Price: $$

Saint Jane markets this serum for “stressed skin.” It’s said to target complexion issues using potent botanicals that address signs of aging and calm irritation.

In addition to CBD, this serum contains sea buckthorn, calendula, and rose. Sea buckthorn contains a range of fatty acids that may have anti-inflammatory properties, manage sebum production, and reduce blocked pores.

Calendula is thought to enhance skin firmness by increasing hydration and protect against oxidation. Rose oil has a high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids, which are thought to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

We headed to Sephora’s website to look over reviews since Saint Jane’s website seems to only showcase 100 percent satisfied reviewers.

While the majority of Sephora customers seem happy with this serum, some pointed to issues like it being too drying, or that it sits on top of skin instead of absorbing into skin.

Others said it simply didn’t work for them or doesn’t seem worth the price tag compared to other similar CBD products by other brands.

If you’re on the fence, you can buy a mini trial size of the serum at Saint Jane or Sephora. It’s much lower priced than the full size.

Saint Jane Luxury Lip Shine

  • CBD type: Full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 50 mg
  • COA: Available on product page

Price: $

This lip product is created using eight ingredients that are said to be rich in antioxidants. It’s also made with botanicals like chamomile, sunflower, and aloe, which are thought to help calm skin.

Saint Jane says lip shine is vegan, cruelty-free, and made without use of toxic ingredients.

While the Saint Jane website showcases glowing reviews with customers praising this product’s ability to hydrate lips and its attractive, neutral color, some reviewers on Sephora’s website are less impressed. They say it doesn’t do much more than a regular gloss does.

If you’re interested in adding CBD to your beauty routine but aren’t sure where to start, first think about your skin care needs and preferences.

Since Saint Jane products are primarily face and body serums along with a few lip gloss and cream options, it should be fairly easy to decide if you’re looking to target signs of aging, soften your skin, or add a boost of color and calming botanicals to your lips.

To apply the Saint Jane Luxury Body Serum, dispense two to six pumps into your hands and smooth all over your body (assuming you’ve performed a patch test first). This serum works with wet or dry skin, and can also be used as a bath oil.

To use the Luxury Beauty Serum, apply one full dropper to clean, dry skin in the morning and again before bed. Saint Jane says this product works best when layered with The C-Drops.

When using the Luxury Lip Shine, Saint Jane instructs to apply it like you would a typical nourishing lip oil, day or night.

Dosage

Dosage and application recommendations are displayed for most products on Saint Jane’s website.

When trying new CBD products, start with the smallest possible dose, especially if you’re new to CBD. That’s the best way to discover how your body reacts to a particular formula.

From there, you can slowly increase the dose to find the best CBD dosage for you. This comes down to a number of factors, like product potency and your body chemistry.

The World Health Organization says CBD is generally considered to be safe, but it’s important to know that some people may experience side effects like:

  • fatigue
  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in weight

It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before trying CBD, especially if you’re taking any medications. CBD can interact with some medications.

It’s also important to use caution with any new-to-you product. Carefully look over the ingredients to make sure you don’t have any allergies.

Perform a patch test before using any topical, like a face or body serum. To do a patch test, put a small amount of product on the inside of your wrist. Wait 24 hours to see whether you see any redness or irritation.

Saint Jane is a new, luxury CBD brand that was established in 2019. The company offers a rather small line of CBD beauty products online and in Sephora stores.

Although Saint Jane could improve the level of transparency about how its products are specifically made, the company has an overall solid reputation among its consumers despite its higher price ranges.

The company doesn’t seem to have received FDA warnings or been subject to any lawsuits.

Remember to talk with your doctor before trying any CBD products.

Is CBD Legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.
