Chicopee gives preliminary approvals to new $15 million cannabis cultivation business – MassLive.com

CHICOPEE – The City Council will consider a proposal to allow a $15 million marijuana cultivation facility to be located in a former industrial building after one of its subcommittees gave the proposal the green light.

The Council’s zoning committee voted 4-0 on Thursday to recommend Mass Alternative Care Inc. be granted a special permit to locate an about 56,000-square-foot cannabis cultivation facility in part of an about 154,000 square-foot industrial building at 77 Champion Drive.

It also approved five waivers to the regulations, including two reducing the required 100-foot planted buffer between any cannabis operation and a residential area, and at least one which was considered a technicality due to an outdated rule in the city’s zoning code.

Mass Alternative Care Inc. opened the first cannabis business in Hampden County in 2018 with a medical marijuana retail facility in 2018 at 1247 East Main St. and then expanded to add recreational sales in July 2019. The East Main St. also includes a cultivation and production operation.

“It is only a manufacturing facility,” said AJ Crane, owner of A. Crane Construction, which is renovating the building for the new project. “There is no public access at all.”

He called it an “ideal location” for the business. The building is in an industrial zone, which allows for cannabis cultivation. There is no problem with water or electrical access and there is a gated fence surrounding the entire property. It is also far from churches, schools and other protected uses.

The project is nearly identical to one Apical Inc., of Easthampton, proposed in March of 2019. The zoning committee had voted to recommend the plan then, but that company never went through with the development, City Planner Lee Pouliot said.

“They had a good idea. We decided to do the same thing,” Crane said. “Same building. Same presentation. Same use.”

The company currently has six cultivation rooms and the new location, if approved, would have a dozen and allow owners to increase operations by 300%, said Kevin Collins, manager of Mass Alternative Care.

If approved the company would hire about 100 full- and part-time employees who would earn salaries ranging from $30,000 a year for those will little experience up to about $45,000 for more-experienced growers, Collins said.

Along with the $15 million investment, the company will pay up to 20% taxes which includes a 6.25% sales tax, a 10.75% excise tax, and local option tax for cities and towns up to 3%. It has also paid the city more than $2 million in use fees for water, sewer and electricity since it opened the first business.

One neighbor signed onto the virtual meeting. While she had no complaints about the proposal, she did ask questions about any smell coming from the building, which Collins explained was handled with a high-tech ventilation system that includes odor control scrubbers.

City Councilor George Balakier also asked about the other company, Holden Humphry, which distributes building materials, which is located in the 77 Champion Drive building.

Barbara Green, who represents the building owners, said they have talked to the owners and they have no complaints about the new proposal.

Legal cannabis sales shot up to $17.5B during the pandemic – Business Insider

  • The pandemic initially disrupted the legal cannabis industry, but 2020 saw record sales of $17.5 billion.
  • Dispensaries navigated changing regulations and markets to find new ways to reach customers.
  • A cannabis producer in Las Vegas told The New York Times sales in Nevada could top $1 billion in 2021.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Shortly after Nevada officials announced that licensed cannabis stores and medical dispensaries could reopen after lockdown, Nicolas MacLean said cars were lined up for five blocks waiting for curbside pickup.

Like many industries in Las Vegas, the cannabis industry used to rely on tourists for sales, but that changed when the pandemic hit, MacLean, who serves as the CEO of Las Vegas-based cannabis producer Aether Gardens, told The New York Times.

„Locals are very discerning — they want something they aren’t going to find on the black market,” MacLean said. „Especially when you are stuck at home.”

The year of 2020 saw extraordinarily strong sales of legal cannabis in the US, up 46% from 2019 to a record $17.5 billion, according to cannabinoid market research firm BDSA.

„I expect this will be the first year Nevada does over a billion in cannabis sales,” MacLean said. „And it happened on the back of what I think no one expected.”

In western Massachusetts, where recreational cannabis use is legal, Meg Sanders, CEO of Canna Provisions, said government restrictions and later social-distancing requirements forced her to radically change her sales strategy.

At first, only medical dispensaries were allowed to remain open, while recreational-use retailers were forced to close.

„To have liquor stores deemed essential and not adult-use cannabis — especially when the law passed in Massachusetts was about regulating cannabis like alcohol — was surprising and unfortunate,” Sanders told The Times.

As Canna Provisions was allowed to re-open, the shop’s particular boutique-style in-person shopping experience had to change in favor of over-the-phone preorders.

„Our county is an internet desert,” she explained.

Now when customers call, they speak with a salesperson who can answer their questions and walk them through the available topicals, edibles, and smokables — a method, she said, is „working” for business.

„In our Lee store, preorders have become almost 100 percent of our business, so we bought more handsets and hired more people to answer the phones, and our revenue is up,” she said.

In Florida, Oswaldo Graziani Lemoine, the creative director at Fluent Cannabis Care, said his company’s 19 locations were able to remain open for the roughly half million state residents with medical cannabis cards. (Recreational use is illegal in the state of Florida.)

„For us, it became less about the in-store experience and more about offering our customers deals and the ease of pickup,” he told The Times.

In addition to offering special discounts, Graziani said future locations will be designed with pre-orders and drive through sales in mind — no counter, no lobby, just green.

Cannabis treatment for sick dogs lags behind US, but Colorado expert urges caution – ABC News

Paddy is a 15-year-old golden retriever, much loved but slow on his legs.

He is on medication for arthritis and has to have blood tests every six months to check for kidney damage — a common side effect.

„It can also cause vomiting, but he’s OK, as long as he gets fed a lot,” his owner Della Stevens said.

„We give him one tablet at night and he deals with it alright. Without it, he’d really struggle to get up and down.”

It is still an oddity in Australia but in many US states, medicinal cannabis medications including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the psychoactive component in cannabis — are being used as a treatment for pets with conditions such as arthritis and epilepsy.

It is a big and growing business.

A man in overalls is standing in a big crop of legal marijuana plants.

According to US market research firm Brightfield Group, consumers spent $US426 million ($A551m) last year on pet products containing medicinal cannabis of some kind.

That number is expected to jump to $US629 million ($A814m) by the end of this year and $US1.1 billion ($A1.4b) by 2025.

Studies show early positive signs

Stephanie McGrath from Colorado State University is a veterinary neurologist who has conducted clinical trials using medicinal cannabis to treat seizures in dogs.

One study looked at the effect on 16 dogs who were being treated with standard anti-convulsive therapy.

Nine received cannabinoids (CBD) – compounds found in cannabis — and THC while seven were given placebos.

„It was very promising,” Dr McGrath said.

„We showed a significant decrease in seizure activity between the treatment group and the placebo group.”

)

The study also found that the dogs that absorbed CBD at a greater rate also had the greatest reduction in seizures.

„In the US there’s an FDA-approved medicine for children with epilepsy and it was exciting to show that it may have a very similar effect in dogs as well.”

The CBD treatment also came without the liver disease and pancreatitis that can accompany anti-convulsive therapies.

A previous study looking at the effectiveness of medicinal cannabis on osteoarthritis in dogs was less convincing, but Dr McGrath is lining up another project to look at that nexus again later this year.

Australia lagging behind

An Australian medicinal cannabis company that sources some of its raw materials from Tasmania, Auscann, recently completed a clinical trial in the US that looked at 46 dogs with osteoarthritis.

The randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial tested the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the psychoactive compound in cannabis — and CBD on the mood, pain and lameness of the dogs over eight weeks.

The company told the Australian Securities Exchange: „A total reduction in veterinary lameness scoring was observed in all dogs treated with CPAT-01, showing improvement over time, which was numerically better for treated dogs compared with placebo.”

Some hemp-based products, which include very low levels of THC and do not affect an animal’s mental state, are available in Australia.

But the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority has not approved a single medicinal cannabis product for veterinary use in Australia and, in a statement, said that before any were authorised they would have to meet the statutory criteria, including safety and efficacy.

What happens if a pet overdoses on cannabis?

Not much, as it turns out, unless they eat a lot of other dangerous stuff as well.

Cannabis is legal in Colorado for recreational purposes as well as medical treatment.

Professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Tim Hackett, also from Colorado State University, has treated hundreds of animals brought in with marijuana toxicity after eating their owner’s stash.

He said after Colorado legalised cannabis use, the number of dogs admitted to the ED went from a handful a year to almost one a day.

„This is a dog problem; cats don’t eat this stuff,” Dr Hackett said.

„A human will know to stop after one gummy bear, but a dog will eat as much as they can, and then they come in with a range of systems from mildly impaired to unconscious and barely able to breathe.

„For the most part, they recover pretty well.

Eating too much oil, which is often used as a carrier for medicinal cannabis, can also cause pancreatitis and death.

More data needed

Although medicines containing marijuana are available for pets over the counter in many US states there is still very little research to prove their therapeutic benefits.

„We still don’t understand things like, how much do you dose the dog to get a similar level as you get in a person?” Dr Hackett said.

„They have very different metabolic rates and they handle things differently. A single paracetamol in a cat can be fatal.

„We’re really in unknown territory because the pharmacokinetics (how the body deals with medication) still haven’t been done.”

As for Ms Stevens, she’s open-minded about cannabis treatments.

„If it didn’t have the side effects, like the damage to the kidneys, I’d give it a go,” she said.

What is Delta-10 THC? Next Big Cannabinoid After Delta-8? – Ministry of Hemp

Exploring the world of hemp seems to be a never-ending saga.

While we were busy gathering the details of Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC and understanding these, another “Delta cousin” popped up!

This time, it’s Delta-10 THC.

For starters, we’re quite familiar with the effects of Delta-9 THC. It gets you the notorious high marijuana is famous for. A large quantity of it can even mess with your head, resulting in paranoia. On the other hand, Delta-8 THC has mild psychotic effects. It gives a euphoric feeling and doesn’t get you too high.

So, what about Delta-10 THC? Any idea?

If not, then read on to find out about this newest member of the Delta family.

What is Delta-10 THC?

Among the 100+ cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, Delta-10 THC is one. Delta-10 THC is a rare molecular relative of Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC. Since it is a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) isomer, it possesses similar psychoactive properties as that of Delta-9 THC.

Delta-10 THC was rather an accidental discovery by Fusion Farms, a California-based cannabis company. The Delta-10 compound was found as a by-product of a forest fire. Fusion Farms had bought some outdoor-grown hemp to manufacture concentrates. But due to the wildfire, the biomass got contaminated with fire retardant chemicals.

Unaware of the contamination, Fusion Farms continued with the extraction process. It was after completing the distillation process that they noted the formation of unusual crystals. This was when the Delta-10 compound was found. But not exactly.

Even though it had a different molecular and crystalline structure than the previously formed cannabinoid crystals, the scientists at the company’s lab weren’t sure of what it was.

Hence, the research began.

Coming to the effects, Delta-10 bears a close resemblance to Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC. However, the psychoactive effects are much weaker.

Delta-10 THC is found in traces in the cannabis plant. At times, the amount is so minuscule that labs mistake it for some other compound. Hence, extraction of this compound is a huge challenge. It requires ample time, advanced technology, and effort.

So, How Does Delta-10 Act When Consumed?

The mechanisms of Delta-10 THC are still under research as its discovery was pretty recent. But it likely interacts with the body similarly to the other THC compounds – Delta-8 and Delta-9.

Both Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC bind to the CB1 receptors located in the central nervous system (mainly the brain). Also, both of these compounds have a strong affinity with the CB2 receptors. We can expect the same kind of reactivity and interaction of Delta-10 with our endocannabinoid system.

However, we still do not know much about the binding mechanisms of these THCs with the CB2 receptors, especially in the case of Delta-10 THC, since this compound has been discovered relatively recently. So, it is most likely that Delta-10 THC binds with both the receptors similarly to Delta-8 and Delta-9 – at least at high concentrations.

Can You Get High On Delta-10 THC Like Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC?

A very straightforward answer would be yes.

Delta-10 THC can get you high. But its potency is not like those of Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC.

Of all the three Tetrahydrocannabinols, Delta-9 has the most intense psychotropic effects. It can get you extremely high, even leading to hallucinations, paranoia, clouded judgment, anxiety, impaired coordination, and perceptions, etc.

On the other hand, Delta-8 THC has a relatively low intensity of euphoria. It can make you feel slightly buzzed, stimulate your appetite, and wash away all your stress, even clearing your mind, and resulting in you feeling immensely content and relaxed.

Coming to Delta-10 THC, this compound also has low psychotropic effects. Though you may not find too many first-hand experiences explaining the effects of Delta-10 THC, our research suggests that it has more sativa-like effects. In other words, Delta-10 triggers an energetic feeling, increased focus, alertness, and creativity. A dose of Delta-10 THC in the morning and you’re all set to kick-start your day with full vigor. These effects are unlike those of Delta-8 THC, which promotes relaxation and grants a good night’s sleep.

So, with its mild euphoria and increased focus and alertness, Delta-10 THC may soon become a consumer’s favorite.

Can Delta-10 THC Make You Fail A Drug Test?

Irrespective of what THC variant you consumed, there’s always a possibility of failing a drug test.

Here’s why. Drug tests potentially look for the metabolites that all types of THC break into in the human body. So, even if you consume Delta-8 or Delta-10 THC product, which contains less than 0.3% Delta-9, it will break down into the same set of metabolites. Hence, drug tests will detect them.

Drug tests do not detect Delta-9 THC in its original, intact form. As the body starts breaking THC into metabolites, drug tests are meant to detect these traces of metabolites.

If you’re not a frequent user, ensure that you do not consume any THC compound when you are close to a drug test. For example, if you consume Delta-8 in the morning and there’s a drug test at your workplace, you are certain to fail it.

It takes around 2 days to even a year to eliminate all the metabolites from all parts of your body, of course, depending on the THC build-up and the part of the body that may be sampled for the drug test.

So, we’d suggest you stay miles away from any product containing THC if you have an upcoming drug test.

Should You Care About Delta-10 THC? If So, Why?

Delta-10 THC may be the next big thing in the cannabis industry. This is because the feedback about this compound has been quite phenomenal so far. So, brands are ramping up their production of Delta-10 THC to meet the soaring demands.

Currently, brands are witnessing thousands of orders for Delta-8 THC products, and, looking at it, they’re preparing for a similar scenario for Delta-10 THC as well.

Furthermore, several consumers have demanded something more potent than CBD that just enhances their natural wellness routine. Consumers want to feel a deeper relaxation without playing the medical cannabis card. For these consumers, CBD isn’t always enough.

So, these consumers, after realizing that Delta-8 and Delta-10 THC could provide next-level effects, may not want to come back to CBD at all.

However, there’s the issue of legality in the case of Delta-10 THC. According to the DEA statement, synthetically derived THCs fall under Schedule I/Controlled Substances.

But it has not been clearly defined what constitutes the term “synthetically derived”. So, companies are going ahead with the production of Delta-10 THC from safe, legal, and compliant CBD.

When it comes to legality, Delta-10 THC falls into a grey zone. Even though Delta-10 THC is legal at the federal level, the state laws concerning any and all THCs vary. Some states prohibit the entry of all THCs compounds into their territory.

Considering the legality, there are three points that you should remember about Delta-10 as well as Delta-8 THC products. These are:

  • The extracts must be derived from hemp, not marijuana
  • Delta-8 and Delta-10 THC products must contain less than 0.3% of Delta-9 THC
  • The products must NOT be synthetically produced from Delta-9 THC.

Since Delta-9 is still a Schedule-I substance and Delta-10 can be synthetically derived from it, you must get the information right before placing an order. Also, don’t forget to check the laws of your state.

Is Producing Delta-10 THC A Demanding Task?

Delta-10 THC is hard to produce. High Delta-10 THC strains are not currently available in the market, as producing this cannabinoid takes too much effort and capital to make it commercially viable.

Also, one must conduct several scientific processes to derive Delta-10 THC from CBD (and encounter legal hassles, too!).

Since Delta-10 THC occurs in minuscule quantities in nature, it has to be produced by chemically altering crude CBD or CBD isolates. If a brand produces Delta-10 THC using crude CBD, the reaction is generally created through Vitamin C and carbon derivatives. On the other hand, if CBD isolate is used, solvents and acids need to be incorporated.

Overall, it has to be mentioned that producing Delta-10 THC is not something that can be done in a jiffy. Production of Delta-10 THC demands a massive amount of resources, infrastructure, and time – which companies don’t usually find profitable.

How Is Delta-10 THC Tested and Measured?

CBD, THC, and most other cannabinoids are measured and tested similarly—with the help of potency tests.

Some laboratories use an Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography machine to measure the potency of Delta-10 THC in flowers, extracts, and edibles. Also, the latest technologies and industry practices are employed to ensure that Delta-10 is being accurately discerned from CBL and CBC.

Is Delta-10 Is Safe For Consumption?

Even though Delta-10 THC is relatively new in the market, the products are being rigorously tested for safety and quality. All ingredients are extensively lab-tested and safe to use. It’s just a matter of time before many more brands start to show up in the market with new Delta-10 THC products.

Labs are now equipped with advanced technology that allows the extraction of Delta-10 THC using safe, food-grade, and non-toxic products and equipment. Regarding consistency, labs stay updated with the latest information related to methods that can accurately analyze cannabinoids to ensure the detection of Delta-10 THC.

Before you place an order for Delta-10 THC products, we suggest that you look for Certificates of Analysis (COAs). By ensuring this, you’ll be able to guarantee that the products you’re buying are safe to be consumed and will not harm you in any way.

What Types of Delta-10 THC Products are Available in the Market?

You can consume Delta-10 THC products in different ways. Currently, the availability of Delta-10 products is limited in the market. But we are sure we’ll see more of them soon.

Several companies are planning to launch an assortment of Delta-10 THC products in the coming years. This means that you will soon be able to choose from different delivery methods such as vaping, eating, applying, or ingesting Delta-10.

Here’s a list of what Delta-10 THC products you can expect in the future:

  • Tincture/oil
  • Vape cartridges
  • Disposable pens
  • Gummies
  • Chocolate bars
  • Dabbing syringes
  • Flower and pre-rolls

Whichever product you choose, we recommend starting with smaller dosages. After intake, wait for at least 30 minutes and observe how your body reacts to the Delta-10 THC product. This is how you’ll be able to gradually build a tolerance level. If you notice no effects, try taking a slightly larger dosage and repeat the process until you get the desired effects.

However, in the case of any chronic ailment or medical condition, consult a doctor before starting with Delta-10 THC. If you have high blood pressure, better refrain from taking the compound in high doses.

Before We Part…

With stress becoming a major health issue across the world, and especially so in this country, Delta-10 THC could be the boost we all need.

Different laboratories and brands are excited to see how the demand for Delta-10 THC turns out in the future along with what consumers have to say regarding its effects.

Delta-10 THC products have already started entering the market. Though most of them are blends of Delta-10 THC and other cannabinoids, pure Delta-10 THC products are also on their way.

It’s just a matter of time before you get your hands on one of those!

In this article, we have tried to cover the most crucial pieces of information relating to Delta-10 THC and we hope that it helps you expand your knowledge about this relatively new discovery.

However, you must remember to consult your doctor before placing an order for a Delta-10 THC product, and, of course, make sure to check the laws of your state of residence.

MSHP: Troopers warn about the dangers for children of THC edibles almost identical to the original snack – ABC17NEWS – ABC17News.com

Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) seized 26.4 pounds of normal-looking snacks and treats containing THC along with 9 pounds of marijuana.

MSHP tweeted about the drug bust on May 25.

Image
From MSHP Troop F Twitter

Corporal Kyle Green with MSHP said it is not new for troopers to stop vehicles and find THC edibles, but what is new is the packaging for these chips, cookies, and candies are starting to look more identical to the packaging you would find in any convenience store.

Green said the MSHP wants to bring attention to the danger behind the packaging since kids can get ahold of the snacks and end up ingesting them.

Green said whether the parents legally or illegally had the edibles and their kids got into them they could still face charges. He said the most common charge would be endangering the welfare of a child, but that it would be up to the prosecutor to decide the final charge.

The National Capital Poison Center reported an increase in the number of children brought to the emergency room after ingesting medical marijuana products. Most of the children found the cookies, candies or snacks from their family members or family friends.

The most common symptoms for children were dizziness, labored breathing, and trouble walking.

Nano-what? We’ve got you—let’s talk science. Nanotechnology is far from new. It’s a type of technology that’s been used for many years in many other industries. In skincare, it keeps skin moister for longer. In the food industry, nanotech is often responsible for better tasting products and greater food safety. At long last—it’s finally cannabis’s turn to get in on the action. In an industry where oil is everything, nanotechnology makes the impossible possible, emulsifying large oil droplets and turning them into nano—aka tiny—water-soluble molecules that can mix—and stay mixed—with liquid. The benefits of going nano are two-fold. First, at this tiny size, cannabis oil can dissolve evenly into any beverage. Forget everything you’ve heard about oil and water not mixing. Not here, baby! Nanotechnology allows you to enjoy edible cannabis in ways previously hard to reach: Smoothly, evenly, and in anything.

Investing In The Cannabis Industry In 2021

Are you looking for marijuana stocks to buy before it’s federally legal in the US? At the present time, there are many different companies showing potential for investors. In the first quarter of 2021, many leading US cannabis companies have seen significant growth in revenue so far this year. In addition, these companies have also given 2021 revenue guidance that predicts substantial growth for the time period.

For the past couple of year’s cannabis companies have been expanding throughout the US at a rapid pace. Now with federal cannabis reform set to be reintroduced on Capitol Hill investors may see a federally legal cannabis industry in 2021. Because of this possibility, more traders are focusing on the cannabis sector in June looking for the best marijuana stocks to invest in. Currently, there are cannabis stocks that could produce significant gains for investors in the near future.

After several months of declining in market value, May brought some upward momentum to the cannabis sector. Although many pot stocks are still trading much lower than the highs, they achieved in February the upside shows the potential for gains in June.  But before investing in cannabis stocks there are a few things to consider. For one the cannabis sector is known for being one of the more volatile parts of the market.

Top Marijuana Stocks And Market Volatility

This volatility can be seen in many of the vertically integrated marijuana stocks in the market. But there are some stocks that have shown more stability in the market for investors.  One of those areas is ancillary marijuana stocks. In general, ancillary cannabis companies are those companies that support the cannabis industry without touching the actual plant.

As the cannabis market continues to grow these companies are expanding alongside the industry. For investors looking for long-term positions, these cannabis stocks offer less market fluctuation for traders. In some cases, they also offer a dividend as an incentive to shareholders for long-term investing.

MY ANIMUS FOR CANNABIS – Boca Raton’s Most Reliable News Source – The Boca Raton Tribune

That’s right, I’m angry.   I have animus for cannabis posing as simple cookies.

I almost lost a dear relative recently who collapsed and was rushed to hospital after eating a bunch of them.  Little did he know the sweet little cookies were laced with pot.  Stuffed with weed.  Mired in Marijuana!

He was hungry.  Was in meetings all morning.  Had not eaten breakfast or lunch.  His friend gave him the box of cookies to munch on.  He ate practically the whole box.  His friend never mentioned what they contained besides sugar and dough.

They were dangerously delicious!  Suddenly his legs went limp.  He had trouble breathing.  He was losing consciousness like his life was saying bye-bye.

How raunchy, desperate for effects our society has become that would allow such potential poison for some disguised as a benign looking product like a box of cookies?  Commercially packaged and sold at a store like Twinkies?  Are we a society so wanting to live on the edge, be cool, laid back, make money getting people high, maybe dead?

Marijuana cookies.  They’re easy to make.  You prepare the dough, pack it with weed, pop them in the oven, then enjoy the taste and most importantly, the effect.  Oh yes, the EFFECT!

But please, before you serve them, tell your guests what’s in them, as for some they could be deadly!

Now I would like to see the jackass who gave my hungry relative those marijuana-laced cookies censured and fined.  And I’d like the company that made those cookies and packaged them as harmless cookies forced to pay a penalty and in future required to place on their culpable cookie boxes this warning in BLAZING BIG TYPE:

WARNING!  THESE COOKIES CONTAIN MARIJUANA THAT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS EFFECTS!  NOT FOR RECREATIONAL USE.  IF SO USED, IT’S ILLEGAL AND MAY SUBJECT USERS/SUPPLIERS TO CRIMINAL CHARGES!

What is Recreational Marijuana?

Where I live in Florida, persons caught in possession of edible marijuana may be arrested and face penalties.  Still, they’re becoming an increasingly popular method of ingesting cannabis not always for clinical use. Although the use of edibles is technically permitted by state law for individuals with a valid medical marijuana card, edible marijuana is nevertheless illegal for recreational use.‍

People use recreational marijuana for enjoyment rather than for medical conditions. Many users believe marijuana is safe because it is now legal in so many states. But marijuana use can be dangerous.

  • Recent data suggests 30% of those who use marijuana may have a marijuana use disorder. People who begin using marijuana before age 18 are four to seven times more likely to develop a marijuana use disorder than adults, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
  • Individuals who use marijuana on a regular basis may have a higher risk for psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and other substance use disorders, according to NIDA

Serious side effects can occur, including elevated heart rate, increased risk of heart attack and stroke, hallucinations, impaired memory, and more.

Ahh Those Incredible Edibles

The term edible is used to describe food or drinks that contain marijuana in a form that can be ingested. In many cases, edibles are cooked or manufactured in the form of baked goods, such as cookies or sweets, like gummies and chocolate bars.

While marijuana is commonly smoked or vaporized, some marijuana users prefer to consume cannabis in edible form. Edibles are helpful for medical marijuana patients, especially those who want to avoid harmful effects of inhaling smoke.

While some people may use recipes to make their own edibles, in some states legally licensed medical marijuana dispensaries have started to sell commercially manufactured edibles.

Unlike smoking marijuana or vaporizing it, the effects of an edible will only take place after digestion. The process could take anywhere up to an hour before any effects of the drug are experienced.

Technically permitted

Edible medical marijuana is technically permitted by Florida state law. However, the state’s department of health has not yet finalized regulations regarding commercially manufactured edibles.  Florida is one of the many states to legalize the use of medical marijuana.  Still, marijuana is listed as a Schedule I drug by federal law, and recreational use of marijuana is still illegal in the state of Florida.

Those caught in possession of marijuana without a valid medical marijuana card can be arrested and charged with drug possession. This also includes the possession of edibles – even those purchased legally in another state.
