Saginaw man charged with being high on THC in fatal crash of motorcyclist – MLive.com

SAGINAW, MI — Months after a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with an asphalt truck in rural Saginaw County, a man has been charged with causing his death while under the influence of marijuana.

Authorities on June 3 issued a warrant for Logan H. Cubic, 19, on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death. The charge is a 15-year felony.

Cubic appeared on Monday, June 7, in Saginaw County District Court for arraignment. The arraigning judge set Cubic’s bond at $7,500 cash-surety or 10% and referred his case to the public defender’s office.

The charge stems from a crash that occurred about 10:09 p.m. on Oct. 9 in the 10000 block of M-13/Albee Road in Albee Township, less than 10 miles south of the Saginaw City limits.

Prosecutors allege Cubic was driving a Rigda Sealcoating & Asphalt truck north on M-13 when it crossed the center line and collided with a southbound motorcycle driven by 62-year-old Douglas E. “Big Doug” Turner Sr., of Burt.

Emergency responders pronounced Turner deceased at the scene. Cubic was uninjured.

Investigators obtained a blood sample from Cubic, which was sent for toxicological examination. Results of that test indicated Cubic had active THC in his system when the fatal crash occurred, prosecutors said.

THC is the psychoactive component in marijuana.

Authorities issued charges upon receiving the toxicology information.

Turner worked as a journeyman roofer and retired from Roofer’s Local 149, according to his obituary.

“He enjoyed riding his Harley, kayaking with his friends, spending time with his family, and gardening,” his obituary states.

Turner was survived by five children, six grandchildren, his mother, two brothers, and numerous other extended family members and friends.

Cubic was on probation when the crash occurred and remains on it. An Iosco County judge sentenced him to two years’ probation in March 2020 on a conviction of seduction.

Cubic is to appear for a hearing at 11 a.m. on June 21.
