HADCO reaches deal with medical cannabis company | Business – Huntington Herald Dispatch

LESAGE, W.Va. – Medical marijuana continues to grow in West Virginia.

In July, a Florida-based company called Trulieve was the first to start planting cannabis in Cabell County. Trulieve got approval from the Cabell County Board of Health last year to start operations in Lesage at the HADCO Business Park on Fraziers Lane off West Virginia 2.

On Tuesday, the Huntington Area Development Council (HADCO) announced it has reached a deal with Trulieve WV Inc. on the sale of more than 70 acres of industrial property and the long-term lease of its 100,000-square foot industrial building at the business park.

“The medical cannabis industry is growing in West Virginia and this new investment will have a significant impact on our local and regional economy, said David Lieving, President and CEO of HADCO. “This project will provide good paying jobs for our residents and will place Huntington, West Virginia at the forefront of the rapidly growing cannabis industry in West Virginia. HADCO welcomes Trulieve to the Huntington area and wishes the company many years of success.”

The company had already initiated some operations in Building 5, a warehouse and manufacturing building. Trulieve has been using the building for its growing operations, which is done indoors in a controlled climate.

The company will own nine dispensaries in the state and expects to have product on the shelves by the end of the year, all depending on how well it grows in West Virginia.

Trulieve says it came in with the goal to hire local.

“This deal, which is expected to create more than 100 new full-time jobs, comes after more than a decade of site development and millions of dollars in infrastructure upgrades to support business and manufacturing investment on the site,” he said.

Trulieve’s investment and presence at HADCO Business Park will be ongoing, Lieving added.

“Trulieve is also investing in the construction of multiple metal buildings of growing, processing and support space for the operation,” he said. “The operation will support a wide range of jobs in the region and has the potential to add supplier opportunities for West Virginia companies as well.”

“We are thrilled to be expanding in West Virginia and collaborating with HADCO as we build our operations in the region,” said Kyle Landrum, Trulieve’s Chief Production Officer. “Access to the immense talent and resources in Cabell County and the greater Huntington area is key to our long-term vision and we look forward to providing positive economic impact as we grow together in the coming years.”

The company has said in the past that its main mission is to provide a new method of pain management, especially in an area hit hardest by the opioid crisis.

Trulieve has hired numerous administrative, managerial and technical staff positions already and more positions are continuing to be posted online. For more information on current and future opportunities, visit the Trulieve’s website at

West Virginia passed the Medical Cannabis Act in 2017. So far, the Office of Medical Cannabis has around 2,500 patients registered statewide.

Wisconsin Cannabis Expo Brings Together Movers and Shakers in State’s Cannabis Industry – Shepherd Express

Tickets are on sale now for the 2021 Wisconsin Cannabis Expo, presented by the Shepherd Express. The event takes place in Milwaukee on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Wisconsin Center, Halls B and C. There will be an additional Expo in Madison on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Alliant Energy Center.

The inaugural Wisconsin Cannabis Expo in February 2020 attracted more than 2,000 attendees and 150 diverse exhibitors that included players from all facets of the cannabis industry—retailers, farmers, growing materials suppliers, scientists and researchers, packaging and marketing companies, and legal and tax accounting experts.

This business-to-business and business-to-consumer expo also includes speakers and panel discussions on topics covering legalization, medical benefits of cannabis and entrepreneurship. All products sampled and sold at the expo are legal in the state of Wisconsin.

Jill Rowe of Hazy Dayz, one of the sponsors of this year’s event, anticipates a tremendous amount of interest this year. She says events such as the expo serve as an opportunity to educate people in a world of information—and misinformation—overload.

“Cannabis information will be given to them more direct, in person. When trying to learn about cannabis alone and online, there can be an overload of information that may be hard to sort through. In some instances, you also may run into conflicting or opinionated facts online. The seminars and vendors at the expo will be able to answer specific questions that attendees may have,” Rowe says.

Sharing and Educating

In addition to providing an educational opportunity for consumers, Stephanie Lembke of Canna Bloom Farmacy, a vendor at this year’s expo, says it is also a great opportunity for those in the cannabis industry to learn from each other. She’s looking forward to sharing and educating people about a vast array of new, unique products that she will have available.

“There are so many cannabinoids out there other than CBD or Delta 8. My company loves to work with many different, lesser-known cannabinoids, such as CBG or CBC to see how they can help people to live a better life,” she enthuses. “We love to teach people so they are more aware of what is available to them. It will be exciting because the last expo, we did not have Delta 8, and now we do.”

Colin Plant, owner of Canni Hemp Co., one of this year’s sponsors, spoke at the 2020 expo. He says being a part of last year’s event was a great experience in that it allowed members of Wisconsin’s cannabis community to network and share ideas. “We are excited to continue the networking among members of our community and to hopefully continue to find new partners and great brands to work with in the future,” he says.

Plant concurs that in-person events such as the Wisconsin Cannabis Expo provides a forum for people to learn about cannabis directly from people in the industry. “Education has brought us a long way, but we still have a very long way to go. We feel that events like this continue to remove the stigma around cannabis here in Wisconsin,” he says.

“Our team owns and operates its own farm, so we can ensure the highest quality hemp is in every bottle,” says Jim Ott, chief executive officer and founder of CFH and James & James. “We start by developing the genetics, we grow and harvest the hemp flower on our farm and we formulate in our lab. We also do in-house and third-party testing to establish quality, consistency and traceability.”

Hemp grown on CFH’s Colorado farm is non-GMO and pesticide and herbicide free. All CFH products, including James & James, are made from industrial hemp and contain less than 0.3 percent THC.

Veterinary cannabis for pain management: The endocannabinoidome – DVM 360

There are, however, a number of studies in animal models of pain that have objectively determined the multiple biochemical pathways that the many proponents of cannabis use to remediate pain in a patient.

Cannabis contains an alphabet soup of cannabinoids—THC, THCA, CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBC, and others—that can interact with membrane receptors on nerves and organs to reduce inflammation or inhibit nociceptive nerve signals. Multiple membrane receptor systems may be involved in the remediation of painful signals. Non-cannabinoid molecules found in the cannabis plant can provide benefit in pain management.2 These are the terpenes and flavonoids, and a discussion of their merits is beyond the scope of this article.

This system of receptors, endogenous ligands, and biosynthetic and degradative enzymes is collectively known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and is the target of these cannabis plant molecules. The ECS has been identified in all vertebrates, and many invertebrates as well. It is part of a larger expanded system of related lipid signaling molecules within the body termed the “endocannabinoidome” (ECB). This expanded endocannabinoid system contains more than 20 biosynthetic or degradative enzymes and more than 20 molecular targets, of which only 2 are cannabinoid receptors. Endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids are “promiscuous” in that they will bind not only with endocannabinoid receptors but with 18 non-endocannabinoid receptors, described below.3,4

The ECB collection of molecules has a strong “prohomeostatic” influence on healthy neurologic and immunologic function, as well as the health of the body as a whole.

There are many diverse and redundant pathways and mechanisms of action of the cannabis plant molecules, phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. These pathways and mechanisms of action are defined by the single or multiple receptors and enzyme systems with which they interact.

Membrane receptors known to be involved in pain management include the following:

Cannabinoid receptors

Cannabinoid receptors are in the G-protein coupled receptor (GPR) superfamily and are specific for cannabinoids. Certain terpenes such as beta caryophyllene may also bind to a cannabinoid receptor and in doing so help to remediate pain.5

CB1 receptors are primarily located in the central nervous system although they are present in lower amounts in the peripheral nervous system. They are involved with cognitive function, emotion, motion/movement, hunger, and neuroprotection. Autonomic and sensory CB1 receptors are responsible for pain perception as well as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and respiratory effects. The intoxicating nature of THC is mediated through its binding to the CB1 receptor. When the CB1 receptor is activated, the retrograde release of acetylcholine, dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, serotonin, histamine, glutamate, and noradrenaline is inhibited.6

CB2 receptors are mainly found in the peripheral nervous system, immune system, and organs. Their activation does not cause intoxication but is responsible for reducing inflammation and providing relief of chronic pain. Additionally, their activation results in the inhibition of inflammatory cytokine production and the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Orphan GPRs

Orphan GPRs are stimulated by cannabinoids as well, with specific biomedical actions, depending on which GPR is being activated. GPR55, which has sometimes been considered as the third cannabinoid receptor, helps to remediate pain. It can bind with endogenous ligands as well as with phytocannabinoids from cannabis. GPR55 has multiple effects in addition to pain relief, among them: normalization of inflammation, blood pressure homeostasis, metabolism benefits such as insulin release from the pancreas, neuroprotection, antineoplastic activity, as well as bone metabolism homeostasis.7

Ligand-gated ion channels

Ligand-gated ion channels such as the transient receptor potential (TRP) superfamily play a large role in remediating pain from heat, cold, and from chemical and mechanical stimuli. Specifically, the capsaicin receptor TRPV1 is involved in remediating pain from these sources. Phytocannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, CBDA, and CBC inhibit the signaling of this receptor in response to noxious stimuli, thus providing pain remediation.8

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs)

PPARs are ligand-activated nuclear transcription factors that are a superfamily comprised of 3 subtypes: PPARα, PPARβ, and PPARγ. Each subtype activates different events, primarily involved in energy metabolism and inflammatory cytokine production and regulation. PPARγ is associated in part with the production and regulation of inflammatory cytokines, and thus is involved in the management of pain associated with inflammation.9

The phytocannabinoids THC and CBD differ in how they activate and interact with these membrane receptor systems. The relationships define the appropriate uses and doses for these plant molecules for the specific type of pain being addressed, whether acute, chronic, or neuropathic. Conventional pain medication has been found to work in part in concert with the endocannabinoid system.

A summary of these actions and some noteworthy facts are listed here:

  • THC is the only plant molecule to bind in an orthosteric manner to the CB1 and CB2 receptors similar to the endogenous ligand binding to these receptors.
  • CBD has a low affinity for the CB1 and CB2 receptors.
  • CBD binds as a negative allosteric modifier to both receptors. When it binds to a cannabinoid receptor, the receptor changes shape. This deactivates THC that is bound to that receptor, which can also help to reduce the amount of intoxication from THC.
  • CBD and THC competitively bind to the degradative enzyme for anandamide, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). In doing so, they reduce the degradation of anandamide, and prolong the blood levels of this endogenous cannabinoid. This is one way that CBD promotes its effects in modulating pain signals.
  • THC and CBD also competitively bind to the transport protein that carries the endocannabinoids through the aqueous extracellular fluid (ECF )and cytosol to the membrane receptors or enzymes for activation or degradation. This competition for binding sites on the transport protein is another mechanism where the phytocannabinoids help to maintain for a longer period of time the blood levels of the endocannabinoids, resulting in a greater therapeutic effect.
  • CB1 receptors inhibit nociceptive pathways and the release of substance P.
  • CBD acts on CB2 receptors to downregulate pro-inflammatory dendritic cells such as microglia to reduce neuropathic pain.
  • Acetaminophen acts in part by indirectly activating CB1 receptors.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs prevent the COX-2 degradation of anandamide, which is one mechanism whereby they help to manage pain.
  • CB2 receptors indirectly stimulate opioid receptors’ afferent pathways; both CBD and THC are allosteric modulators of the mu and delta opioid receptors and thus reduce neuropathic pain signaling. Clinically it has been seen that lower doses of opioids are needed for pain relief when opioids are combined with cannabinoids.
  • CBD dosing is dependent on the type of pain being experienced. In a rat model for chronic pain and sciatic nerve pain, a lower dose of CBD was required for neuropathic pain (2.5-5.0 mg/kg orally) than for chronic pain (20 mg/kg orally). In this study the CBD produced its benefits through signaling the TRPV1 receptor.10

Although there are few pain studies in veterinary species for cannabis, objective evidence and anecdotal reports from the field support that the nonintoxicating fractions of the cannabis plant serving well as part of a multimodal approach to pain management in the dog, cat, and horse.

Inside Stoney Slice, L.A.’s Exclusive, Underground Neapolitan Cannabis-Infused Pizza Parlor – Forbes

In the heart of downtown Los Angeles, you’ll find a private cannabis chef cooking weed-infused pizza à la Naples, Italy, in a wood fire oven.

The exclusive Stoney Slice exists in the liminal private-bordering-illicit cannabis chef world, where it’s not quite accessible to have a storefront, and it’s not possible to serve pizzas in dispensaries due to single-serving regulations.

“For pizza, the category doesn’t exist yet,” says founder and head chef of Stoney Slice, Kashka Hopkinson. Which is what makes the experience so unique. The pizza that Stoney Chef offers up through limited-order are made fresh and using limited quantities. Its recipes are enough to make an Italian chef swoon, with the added strength of a potent edible. The pizza is out of the box, so-to-speak, following a feature in the LA Times.

Stoney Slice’s menu orbits indulgent, elevated versions of classic pizza. Recipes include a traditional Margherita pizza with fresh Mozzarella and a light, basil-heavy sauce; a BBQ chicken pizza with homemade BBQ sauce and fresh cilantro; an indulgent dessert pizza with a layer of marshmallows and weed-infused Nutella. Customers can request the edible strength they want in each pizza starting at 30 milligrams of THC up to 100 milligrams. The chef also told me he will make pizzas that extend that milligram count for medical cannabis patients or those with higher tolerances.

I spoke to Stoney Slice’s head chef Hopkinson about his ambitions for the future, how to take his unique brand of cannabis Neapolitan pizza above ground, and what the consumption licenses are missing in legal cannabis markets.

When did you launch/found Stoney Slice?

We launched last August, we just came up on a year. It started as a labor of love but it’s turning into its own thing.

Can I dine in or take out?

So the process is, we do a curbside pickup only. You order through a text message. You are sent your options, limited or preordered during the day. I don’t want to diminish the quality over quantity. It’s exclusive. We turn down orders all the time. We were aiming to work out of commercial space, but COVID happened. So we had to work out the apartment and figure it out.

I am a private cannabis chef. It’s the same concept as a pop-up restaurant, it has cannabis involved in it. We are working on figuring out how to get into dispensaries and make it a fully legitimate product. For pizza, the category doesn’t exist yet.

The consumption space, they ran into an issue, having made to order cannabis-infused food is essentially unregulated. There is no license that exists for it. Probably in a frozen manner, that’s the only way to have that tested in a lab beforehand.

Do you want to have a sit-down consumption space restaurant in Los Angeles?

Absolutely, that’s the end goal. I think regulations will figure themselves out by that time. Right now, everything in the cannabis industry is so finicky—rules, packaging, stuff like that. Being in the dispensaries and having a storefront where you can consume, that’s the end goal. To be able to have a pizza shop and enjoy it in that space, while it’s hot.

Do you have a favorite menu item?

My favorite pizza has to be the BBQ Chicken Pizza, just because it’s such a unique pizza. Especially in Neapolitan wood fire-style pizza, you usually don’t get a BBQ chicken. We figured how to make a really good sauce. We use a wood fire oven and the pizza cooks quickly, at 900 degrees.

It’s Neapolitan-style pizza. If you were in Naples, Italy, that’s the kind of pizza they would serve you. It’s made with very fluffy crust. It has this beautiful char on it. We offer a 30 milligram and 60 milligram and 100 milligram option. Everyone can kinda take part in it, you can try a lighter option.

How many milligrams do you suggest for someone’s first Stoney Slice pizza?

30 milligrams is like, the sweet spot for an edible when you’re digesting. Eating pizza is more substantial, you digest this differently than you do a gummy. You have to actually digest this as a meal. So we consider all of those things while making it. Flour absorbs, the oil, the amount of fat in it, all means we metabolize that THC a bit slower.

What are the cannabis strains that you use to make the Stoney Slice pizzas?

We use whole flower, a low and slow infusion into olive oil. We use a mixture of two types of flower. We don’t say what the two strains are, it’s a nice pleasant, not heavy, happy high. A blend of two fan favorite strains. Two of the most well-received strains.

If you want to order Stoney Slice, hire you as a private chef, how do we do this?
